Massachusetts Lost Speedway

It's been 3 years since I last visited Lakeville Speedway. The abandoned 1/2 Mile Dirt track in, you guessed it. Lakeville,MA. While I would like to visit again. The last time I was there, I realized, not much had changed from the previous year.  In fact the oil filter that I placed on the granite pit entrance gate post, was in the exact place I had put it on January  1, 2022. It was neat to share this memory with one of my sons, my best friend and his son. But I began to fall in love with the place.  I knew all to well that one day it will meet the same fate as the front stretch and turn 1 which were taken over for residential purposes. That happened after the last Reunion in 2012. I might never visit again. Because in my head I have the memories of entering mid turn 2. Climbing the slight banking to the concrete retaining wall and mighty catch fence still standing tall and proud, some 30 plus years later. The oiled dirt track surface that remains pitted with different layers still holding together. Youngsters like me, to ask the question " what's up with this track surface?"  I found out they poured oil on the dirt to keep the dust down. Something only a old New England swamp Yankee would think to do.
I might not go back to see the old buzzard ever again. You can rest assured that I  keep my ear to the ground to see if I hear grumblings of land development.  So far my soul hasn't been hurt.  I did take a piece of the track surface with me 3 years ago.  For I don't need to see Lakeville Speedway anymore. I have a piece of it for piece of mind.
